Martin Davidson

Head of Commissioning for TV Specialist Factual

BBC

Martin joined the BBC in 1988. In 2001, he became Head of History at RDF Media, making numerous series for a variety of networks. He returned to the BBC in 2005 as Commissioning Executive Producer. He was appointed Commissioning Editor, Specialist Factual, in November 2007. In 2010, he was appointed Head of Commissioning for History and Business.

In that time, he has commissioned a large number of RTS, and BAFTA nominated projects, both documentary and drama, as well as launching a range of new presenters, from Mary Beard, to Amanda Vickery, to Ben Macintryre and Dominic Sandbrook, among others. For 3 years in a row, his History documentaries were the highest rating factual programmes of any genre on BBC 2. In 2014, three of his commissions have been BAFTA nominated, and one, Wipers Times, has already won a Broadcasting Press Guild award.

Since 2012, he has played a lead editorial role in the 4 year anniversary of the First World War, one of the most ambitious ever planned by the BBC. A number of his commissions, including debates, dramas, archive documentaries and presenter-led overviews, have achieved national prominence, spear-heading the BBC's anniversary 2014-2018 ambitions.

In 2014, he added Online Education to his portfolio of responsibilities, working alongside Learning and inhouse production teams, to help ensure the BBC fulfils both its new media and its educational briefs. The WW1 online site, with its distinctive new formats, represents the first step in that process.
